Diagnosing what causes female hair loss

Before you start your growth journey with us, it’s important to determine what type of hair fall you’re experiencing. The loss of hair for women can be caused by several factors including genetics, stress, medical issues, or even your hair extensions. Whether it’s temporary or an ongoing issue, consulting a hair loss expert is essential to ensure the correct diagnosis is given.

1. Inspection of the scalp for inflammation, scaling, and erythema. It is important to determine whether hair fall is associated with scalp scarring.

2. If you have non-scarring alopecia, the causes can include androgenic alopecia, telogenic effluvium, alopecia areata, and tinea capitis. Non-scarring alopecias demonstrate visible follicular units while scarring alopecias are devoid of follicular units.

3. If you have scarring alopecia the causes can include Discoid lupus erythematosusLichen planus, severe fungal, viral or bacterial infection, injury, or burn.

4. The “Pull Test”- a useful ancillary test, approximately 60 hairs are grasped between the thumb, index finger, and middle finger, from the base near the scalp, and firmly but not forcefully tugged away from the scalp. If more than 10% or six hairs are pulled away from the scalp, this constitutes a positive pull test and implies active hair shedding. The patient must not shampoo for at least one day prior to this test.

Alopecia is the most common cause of hair fall for women; remember there is no need to struggle in silence. If you’re thinking of getting a procedure done to give your confidence a boost, we recommend acting upon it.
At Skinssence we recommend, that because of the complexity of female hair fall, you should come in for a private consultation, screening for treatable causes is essential and we will discuss this with you.

What treatments work for hair loss?

Alopecia areata
Another type of hair loss is alopecia areata, which causes patchy hair loss on the scalp. It’s caused by a problem with your immune system, which leads to inflammation affecting the hair follicles. Fortunately, you can expect hair to grow back within a year. During your consultation at Skinssence, we will discuss your treatment options with you.

Female pattern hair loss

In female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) the pathological process is slightly more complex as the female still has testosterone which can be converted to DHT. However, they have reduced amounts of 5 alpha reductase. As a result, the amount of DHT produced is a lot less, hence they do not have complete baldness during the miniaturization process.

Women also have an enzyme called aromatase which converts testosterone to estrogen so depending on the genetic background, early female hair fall can occur. Most female hair fall occurs after menopause as a result of decreased estrogen and the effect of the male hormone becomes more apparent.

We believe that the prevention of further hair fall is vital. For this, we strongly recommend PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) injections, with or without Microneedling.

Suffer no longer with your Alopecia or hair thinning, because we have treatments available which will make you wish you did this sooner. We focus on stimulating your existing hair follicles by then increasing the movement of blood flow, naturally boosting the re-growth of hair.
